Bike Share Project
Following the initial success of the Mobile Bicycle Fleet project, the Lyndhurst Foundation has funded the implementation of an automated bike-share solution, to be introduced to the downtown Chattanooga area in 2010. This system will build upon the relationships already developed through the use of the mobile bicycle fleet, allowing participants to check-out bicycles independently from multiple locations in the urban core.
During the implementation of the bicycle fleet project, it was determined that for successful, sustainable program, efforts must be taken to motivate riders. If not, the system usage cannot count on the long-term users who initially use the system as curiosity seekers.
Dr. Chris Cunningham from UTC's Department of Psychology acted as a lead with ALTN is conducting five focus group sessions in May 2008. The goal was to systematically identify barriers, incentives and appropriate messages to be used in a promotional campaign among local employers to encourage employee usage of a bike share system. As a more permanent bike share program comes closer to implementation, additional focus group sessions will be conducted to inform promotional messaging and determine any policy and environmental barriers that may deter usage.
