Emerging Leaders Program
The Active Living Resource Center is a program managed by National Center for Bicycling and Walking (NCBW) and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program provides technical assistance and outreach programs to community stakeholders and grassroots groups that are working to increase opportunities for active living through walking and bicycling with a special emphasis on creating opportunities for children in low income, disadvantaged communities across the United States.
The Active Living Resource Center has been awarded the Emerging Leaders Internship Program. This initiative takes aim at reversing childhood obesity trends by working with college/university student interns to create opportunities for local youth to experience healthy outdoor activities by focusing on previding youth friendly access to schools, parks, playfields, and other destinations. Ideally the interns will serve as a liaison between the college, the community and local government. Due to the relationship that ALTN has developed with NCBW and the upcoming Pro Walk / Pro Bike Conference, Tennessee has been chosen as a demonstration state. ALTN has been chosen to assist in planning this program and will pilot it in the Fall 2010 Semester at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
This is an exciting program that has great long-term possibilities. It is a unique national demonstration project that will put Chattanooga in the spotlight.
